  • PhD course Metaheuristics with Applications in Logistics

The main objective of this course is to give the PhD students a solid knowledge of metaheuristics and their application to problems in logistics. After participating in this course, the PhD students should be able to perform high quality research using metaheuristic tools. The course will give a thorough study of a number of metaheuristics and the students will be introduced to the state-of-art within the area, e.g. Math heuristics and Hyper heuristics. Various methods for handling problems with multiple objectives will also be explored. Furthermore, practical matters of performing research with the use of metaheuristics will be considered. These include issues such as how metaheuristics are properly compared and how tuning is dealt with. Examples from logistics in the broad sense will be used throughout the course. Lecturers: Graham Kendall (University of Nottingham), Stefan Voss (University of Hamburg), Karl Doerner (University of Vienna)

  • The 17th Estonian Winter School in Computer Science (EWSCS '12)

EWSCS is a series of regional-scope international winter schools held annually in Estonia. EWSCS are organized by Institute of Cybernetics, a research institute of Tallinn University of Technology. The main objective of EWSCS is to expose Estonian, Baltic, and Nordic graduate students in computer science (but also interested students from elsewhere) to frontline research topics usually not covered within the regular curricula. The working language of the schools is English.

  • EURO Summer Institute 2012 - Maritime Logistics

A growing demand of optimization techniques and decision support systems is observed in the maritime industry since many years. Based on advances in information and equipment technologies, maritime shipping, cargo handling and hinterland transportation yield complex logistics processes that have to be managed in increasingly competitive environments. Aim of this EURO summer institute (ESI) is to bring together young researchers with academic experts from operations research, logistics and the maritime business. Every participant will present an own research paper which is intensively discussed within a workshop, for example on ship routing, terminal design, and seaside or yard operations management in container terminals. Next to focused workshops, tutorial lectures on selected topics and invited surveys on recent and future developments in the maritime sector complete the scientific program. With its orientation, the ESI offers a unique opportunity for young researchers in the field to share experience with colleagues from all over Europe and to enter the scientific community.

  • NATCOR Course: Convex Optimisation

AIMS OF THE COURSE: 1) To develop knowledge of different aspects of convex optimization and its applications. 2) To develop an ability to model real life problems as mathematical programming problems and an ability to adapt industry standard solvers to process them. 3) To develop an ability to analyze optimization algorithms for their merits and shortcomings. 4) To develop an ability to work independently as well as in a peer group with limited supervision.

  • Discrete Choice Analysis

This one-week program undertakes an in-depth study of discrete choice models (logit, nested logit, generalized extreme value, probit, logit mixtures), data collection, specification, estimation, statistical testing, forecasting, and application. The covered topics include analysis of revealed and stated preferences data, sampling, and simulation-based estimation, discrete panel data, Bayesian estimation, discrete-continuous models, menu choice, and models with latent variables. The course includes practical application sessions where participants will be provided with discrete choice software to learn how to estimate and test discrete choice models taught in lecture using real databases, and gain hands on experience in using new discrete choice techniques for practical applications. By examining actual case studies of discrete choice methods, students will be familiarized with problems of model formulation, testing, and forecasting.

  • EURO Summer Institute 2012 - Cutting and Packing

Cutting and packing problems are hard combinatorial problems, which arise in the context of many real-world applications, both in industry and in services. In general, they require that “large objects” are to be divided into “small items” in such a way that waste is minimized. Problems of this kind may involve the cutting of paper rolls into narrower rolls in the paper industry, the cutting of large wooden boards into smaller rectangular panels in the furniture industry, the cutting of irregularly shaped components of garment from fabric rolls in the fashion industry, but also the packing boxes into containers or the loading boxes on pallets in logistics applications. The aim of the EURO Summer Institute on Cutting and Packing (ESI-CP) is bringing together young researchers with academic experts in the field. Every participant will present an unpublished research paper on a topic from Cutting and Packing which will be intensively discussed during workshop sessions of the ESI-CP. In addition to these workshops, the Scientific Program will include tutorials on selected topics and invited surveys of recent and an outlook on future developments in the area of Cutting and Packing. An attractive social program will allow for meeting and socializing with other young researchers and established experts in the field. In other words: the ESI-CP will offer a unique opportunity for establishing a personal network, addressing an international audience and creating new research groups.

  • Modeling and Simulation of Transportation Networks

Modeling and simulation methods are essential elements in the design and operation of transportation systems. Congestion problems in cities worldwide have prompted at all levels of government and industry a proliferation of interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) that include advanced supply and demand management techniques. Such techniques include real-time traffic control measures and real-time traveler information and guidance systems whose purpose is to assist travelers in making departure time, mode and route choice decisions. Transportation researchers have developed models and simulators for use in the planning, design and operations of such systems. This course draws heavily on the results of recent research and is sponsored by the Intelligent Transportation Systems Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
