Computing- or, a collection of computer tools and software to help a physical oceanographer do what they do.I'm including notes and tips for downloading various data sets, using software packages, and communicating over distance. All information is provided without any warranty or guarantee. Use it at your own risk. But hopefully it is helpful to you. If the code or instructions are helpful, I'd love to hear it. Always nice to know whether it's worthwhile to put this information online. (Just send me an e-mail at the address above.) Even better, if you encounter and fix a relevant data-access issue that isn't in the "troubleshooting" below, let me know so I can add it to the page. Downloading oceanographic data into Matlabincluding QuikScat, World Ocean Atlas, World Ocean Database, AVISO gridded altimetry, gridded along-track altimetry, Argo float profiles, Sea surface color from SeaWiFS and MODIS satellites, ETOPO bathymetry, NCEP reanalysis 2 products and more as I find them and use them myself. Compiling the Matlab/Fortran CSIRO neutral density code on Mac OS XI've finally managed to compile the CSIRO neutral density code on my Mac. Since it was an extended process, I've documented how I've done it, in case it can be helpful to others. Many thanks to Sally Close and Steve Alderson for their help. Tricks for plotting data in matlabThere are a few free add-ons to improve the quality of Matlab figures, especially for geosciences and oceanographic applications. For publication-quality, I currently prefer GMT. I've included a brief list of Matlab to GMT equivalencies and comparisons. Tools for collaboration--especially across distancesThe range of tools available is continually evolving! I will no longer update this section. A few Latex instructions and templatesI use Latex for my writing, and have put up some quick instructions and templates for bibtex (to keep track of bibliographies) and presentations using the Latex beamer class. I plan to add a template for an oceanographic CV once I make one I like. |
